Founded in Calgary, The51 is on a mission to initiate a transformative movement that harnesses Canada’s underutilized female wealth and directs it toward supporting talented female entrepreneurs and venture funds. With women comprising 51 percent of the population and controlling 30 percent of the world’s wealth, their potential for economic contribution is significant. Furthermore, forty percent of women out-earn their male partners, and businesses established by women have been shown to outperform their male counterparts by an impressive 63 percent. Despite these compelling statistics, women represent less than 25 percent of directors on Canadian boards, and merely 15 percent of partners at Canadian venture capital firms are women. Consequently, only 10 percent of the Canadian VC investment deals since 2014 have been allocated to women-founded companies.
The51 believes that Canada’s economy cannot achieve its full potential if half of its population is not fully engaged. By aggregating the country’s untapped female wealth, The51 aims to cultivate a new critical mass of female investors that will spearhead the next wave of economic growth, positioning Canada as a global center for female-powered capital. With 30 percent of Alberta’s tech startups founded or co-founded by women, the province is making significant strides toward achieving that critical mass. However, The51’s vision extends beyond Alberta; by 2030, the organization aspires to elevate the proportion of female-founded startups across Canada from the current 13 percent to match Alberta’s 30 percent. It also aims to see a year-over-year increase of 30 percent in financing for female-founded startups, further solidifying its commitment to empowering women in the business landscape.
